Which test or software fits your research design?
In short: start from your research question and data type, then choose the test. Comparing two groups, relating two variables, predicting an outcome, testing a model and analysing interviews each use a different technique and often a different tool.
| Your question | Typical technique | Common tool |
|---|---|---|
| Describe your sample | Frequencies, means, standard deviations | SPSS |
| Is my scale reliable? | Cronbach's alpha | SPSS |
| Do two groups differ? | Independent-samples t-test or Mann-Whitney U | SPSS |
| Do three or more groups differ? | One-way ANOVA or Kruskal-Wallis | SPSS |
| Are two variables related? | Pearson or Spearman correlation | SPSS |
| What predicts an outcome? | Multiple regression | SPSS |
| Does a model with latent variables fit? | PLS-SEM or CB-SEM | SmartPLS or AMOS |
| What themes appear in interviews? | Thematic analysis | NVivo |
If you are not sure, send your research questions and we will explain which technique fits and why. See our SPSS guide for a step-by-step workflow.
SPSS support: descriptive, reliability, regression, ANOVA
SPSS is the statistics software most Malaysian universities teach for questionnaire-based FYPs and theses. We help with:
- Data set-up and cleaning. Variable View, coding, reverse-coded items, missing data and outliers.
- Reliability. Cronbach's alpha for each multi-item scale. A value of .70 or higher is commonly treated as acceptable, though guidance varies by field.
- Descriptive statistics. Sample profile tables and charts.
- Assumption checks. Normality, homogeneity of variance and multicollinearity, with the non-parametric alternative if an assumption fails.
- Inferential tests. t-tests, ANOVA, correlation, multiple regression and chi-square.
- Factor analysis. Exploratory factor analysis for scale development.
You receive the output file, a plain-language explanation of each result and a step-by-step explanation you can defend in your viva.
SmartPLS and AMOS: SEM and model assessment
Use structural equation modelling (SEM) when your model has latent constructs, such as satisfaction, intention or trust, measured by several questionnaire items, and relationships between them.
SmartPLS (PLS-SEM) is popular for business and social science theses, particularly with smaller samples or complex models. Typical steps:
- Measurement model: indicator loadings, composite reliability, average variance extracted (AVE) and discriminant validity (for example, HTMT).
- Structural model: collinearity, path coefficients, R-squared, effect sizes and bootstrapping for significance.
AMOS (CB-SEM) is used for confirmatory factor analysis and covariance-based models, with model fit indices such as CFI, RMSEA and SRMR. Commonly cited thresholds vary, so follow your supervisor's and your field's conventions.
We help you choose between approaches, assess each stage and report results clearly. See the SmartPLS guide.
NVivo: coding and thematic analysis
NVivo helps you organise and code interview, focus group or document data. Software does not do the thinking for you, so the coaching focuses on method:
- Importing and organising transcripts.
- Writing a coding approach before you start coding.
- Moving from codes to categories to themes.
- Choosing quotations that support each theme.
- Reporting trustworthiness: how you ensured credibility and consistency.
See the NVivo thematic analysis guide.
Interpreting output and writing the results chapter
A results chapter that only pastes SPSS tables loses marks. Examiners want the test, the numbers and what they mean, in that order.
We help you:
- Read the output: look at significance, then effect size.
- Report in APA style with exact p-values.
- Connect each result to a hypothesis or research question.
- Write the discussion without overclaiming. A significant result is not automatically an important one.
Your results and conclusions come from your data and are your own. We help you read, check and explain them.

Frequently asked questions
Who can help me analyse my SPSS data for my thesis in Malaysia?
Grab Writer's research and data analysis coaches help Malaysian students choose the right test, run it in SPSS, read the output and write up the results in APA style. You receive the output file and a plain-language explanation so you can defend it in your viva.
Which should I use: SPSS, SmartPLS or AMOS?
Use SPSS for descriptive statistics, reliability, group comparisons, correlation and regression. Use SmartPLS or AMOS when you test a model with latent constructs. Your supervisor and field may have a preference, so check first. We can explain the trade-offs for your design.
Can you help if I already collected my data?
Yes. Send your data file, questionnaire and research questions. We will check that the data suits your planned analysis and flag problems before you run anything.
How large a sample do I need?
It depends on the analysis and your programme's requirements. Regression, factor analysis and SEM need larger samples than simple comparisons. Ask your supervisor what your department expects.
