Dissertation vs thesis: what your programme expects
In short: "thesis" and "dissertation" mean different things at different universities. In many programmes, a dissertation is the final research paper of a coursework Master's or MBA, and a thesis is the larger research document for a Master's by research or PhD. Some universities reverse or blur these terms, so your programme handbook is the final word.
- Dissertation (typical): coursework Master's, MBA or honours programmes. A shorter, supervised research project that applies existing methods to a defined question.
- Thesis (typical): Master's by research and PhD. A longer document that must show original contribution.
Length, depth of literature review, and the viva requirement differ accordingly. Our dissertation vs thesis guide and masters by research vs coursework guide explain the differences in more detail. For thesis-level support, see thesis help.
Dissertation proposal guidance
The proposal is where most dissertations are won or lost. A clear proposal gives you a manageable project, and a vague one follows you into every chapter.
We review your draft proposal for:
- A problem statement that is specific and supported by evidence.
- Objectives and research questions that match one another.
- A scope you can finish in your timeframe.
- A methodology that can actually answer the questions.
- A literature outline that points to a gap.
- A realistic timeline and feasible data access.
See research proposal help and the research proposal template.
MBA and coursework-masters dissertation support
MBA and coursework Master's students usually combine full-time or part-time work with study, so time is the main constraint. Typical problems we see:
- Scope too wide. A topic that needs two years of data collection. We help you narrow it.
- Theory without context. Frameworks described but not applied to a real organisation or market.
- Method as an afterthought. A questionnaire designed before the research questions were clear.
- Access to data. Needing company data or respondents you cannot get. Better to find out early.
We coach MBA and Master's students through topic selection, proposal, chapters, analysis and revision. You keep the ideas and the argument. See also our MBA mistakes guide.
Methodology and data collection planning
Your methodology section explains how you will answer your research question, and reviewers use it to judge whether the study is doable. We help you plan:
- Design. Quantitative, qualitative or mixed methods, and why.
- Population and sampling. Who you will study, how you will reach them, and how many you need.
- Instruments. Questionnaire items, interview guides, scales you can adapt, and how you will check validity and reliability.
- Analysis plan. Which test or technique fits each objective. See data analysis help.
- Ethics. Consent, confidentiality and approval from your ethics committee.

Review and revision rounds
Most dissertations go through several rounds of supervisor feedback. We help you make each round count.
- Triage the comments. Sort into must-fix, should-fix and clarification needed.
- Revise one issue at a time. Structure and argument first, language and formatting last.
- Review your revision. We read the new draft against the comments and flag anything missed.
- Final check. Referencing, formatting and consistency across chapters before submission.
Follow-up questions on our feedback are free for 14 days after delivery.
