Referencing and Citation Help: APA 7, Harvard and IEEE

Referencing help for Malaysian students: check your APA 7, Harvard or IEEE citations and reference list before submission. Ask GrabWriter for a review.

Which referencing style does your faculty use?

In short: follow the style named in your assignment brief or faculty referencing guide. If neither names one, ask your lecturer. A short email is better than guessing.

  • APA 7th edition: author-date, one official rulebook. Common in psychology, education, nursing and many business programmes.
  • Harvard: author-date, but a family of styles. Details differ by university, so use your own university's version.
  • IEEE: numbered citations in square brackets. Common in engineering and IT.
  • MLA or Chicago: used in some humanities courses. Follow your brief exactly.

APA is published by the American Psychological Association and has one official rulebook. Harvard has none, so universities publish their own versions. Examples above are illustrative.

Some Malaysian faculties publish their own referencing guide, and it overrides general advice. Our APA guide and IEEE guide cover the main rules.

APA 7th edition help

APA 7th is a single published standard, so it is easy to check against. Points students most often get wrong:

  • In-text: (Ahmad, 2023) for one author, (Ahmad & Lee, 2023) for two, and (Ahmad et al., 2023) for three or more, starting from the first citation.
  • Direct quotations need a page or paragraph number.
  • Article titles in sentence case, with journal name and volume in italics.
  • DOIs written as full links (https://doi.org/...) where available.
  • Heading: "References", with entries in alphabetical order and hanging indents.

We check your citations and reference list against APA 7 and mark what to fix.

Harvard and IEEE help

Harvard. Because it varies, we ask for your university's guide first. Common differences are punctuation, how titles are quoted, whether "and" or "&" is used, and whether the list is called "Reference list" or "Bibliography".

IEEE. Sources are numbered in the order they first appear, shown as [1], [2] in the text, and listed by number, not alphabetically. Engineering and IT students also cite standards, datasets and code, which have their own formats.

See our IEEE guide.

Reference list checking

Send your draft or reference list and we check it for:

  • Every in-text citation appears in the list, and every entry in the list is cited.
  • Consistent style throughout, with no mixing of APA and Harvard.
  • Complete details: authors, year, title, source, volume, pages, DOI or URL.
  • Correct handling of secondary sources, websites, reports and AI tools.
  • Alphabetical order (or numerical order for IEEE) and formatting.

We recommend a reference manager such as Zotero or Mendeley so formatting stays consistent. Always do a last check against your university's guide before you submit.

Common citation mistakes that raise similarity scores

Citations themselves do not "raise" a similarity score, but missing or incorrect ones can leave matched text looking like plagiarism. The usual causes:

  • Quotations without quotation marks, even when the source is cited.
  • Close paraphrasing: changing a few words but keeping the original sentence structure.
  • Copying definitions from textbooks or websites without quoting.
  • Missing citations for facts, figures and ideas.
  • Reusing your own earlier work without declaring it.

Similarity tools flag matches, and a person decides what they mean. We can run a similarity check on your own draft so you can fix real problems before you submit. A low score does not guarantee that the work is acceptable, and a high one is not always a problem. Follow your university's rules.
