What a strong research proposal contains
In short: a strong research proposal shows that your question is worth asking, that you know what has been done, and that you can realistically answer it. Reviewers look for a clear problem, matching objectives and questions, a justified method and a feasible plan.
- Title and abstract
- Background and problem statement
- Research objectives and questions (and hypotheses, if quantitative)
- Literature review or conceptual framework
- Methodology: design, sample, instruments, analysis
- Ethical considerations and limitations
- Timeline and references
Our research proposal template shows the order.
Problem statement, objectives and research questions
The problem statement, objectives and research questions are the spine of your proposal. If they do not line up, reviewers will notice.
- Problem statement: what is wrong, unknown or unresolved, and what evidence shows it matters.
- Objectives: what you will do to address it, written with action verbs (examine, compare, identify).
- Research questions: the questions your study will answer, one for each objective.
A quick test: each objective should map to one question, one part of your method and one part of your results.
Methodology section review
Methodology is often the shortest section and the one that decides approval. We review it for:
- A research design that fits the question.
- A justified population, sampling method and sample size.
- Instruments and data sources you can actually use.
- An analysis plan matched to each objective.
- Ethics and limitations that are stated openly.

Proposal defence preparation
Many programmes require you to present or defend your proposal before moving on. Preparation helps:
- Prepare a short summary: problem, gap, objectives, method, expected contribution.
- List the likely questions: why this method, why this sample, what if access fails.
- Practise explaining each choice in two sentences.
- Prepare a short slide deck that follows the proposal's order.
We run mock Q&A on your own proposal so you know where your answers are weak.
PhD and masters proposal support
Masters. Expect a focused question, a standard method and a realistic timeline. The main risk is scope.
PhD. Expect a stronger case for originality, a deeper theoretical framework and a defensible method. The main risk is a gap that is not sharp enough.
In both cases we review your own writing and thinking. The research idea stays yours. See thesis help and dissertation help for support after the proposal.
