Dissertation vs Thesis: Differences for Malaysian Students

Dissertation vs thesis: what is the difference in Malaysia? Compare length, research depth, level and what your programme usually requires.

Definitions

The words overlap, and their meaning depends on the country and the university. In Malaysia, "thesis" is often used for the major research document at masters by research and PhD level, while "dissertation" is often used for the final project at some coursework masters and bachelor's levels. In the United States the usage is often the reverse, with "dissertation" for the doctorate.

Because of this, the safest approach is to use the term your own university and programme handbook uses.

Level: masters vs PhD

PhD programmes require an original contribution to knowledge, usually reported in a thesis. Masters by research programmes also require a thesis, but its scope is smaller. Coursework masters programmes may require a dissertation, a project paper or a capstone project instead.

Bachelor's students usually complete a final year project (FYP) with a report. It follows the same research logic on a much smaller scale. See our FYP report template for the standard structure.

Length and depth

Length varies by university, discipline and level, so use your graduate school's rules rather than a general number. As a rough pattern, doctoral theses are the longest and most original, masters theses are shorter, and coursework dissertations and project papers are shorter again.

Depth matters as much as word count. A PhD thesis needs original data or theory, a thorough literature review and a clear argument for its contribution. A coursework dissertation is more likely to apply existing methods to a defined problem.

Research vs coursework programmes

In research programmes, the thesis is usually the main or only assessed component, and you work with a supervisor over a long period. In coursework programmes, taught subjects carry much of the assessment, and the dissertation or project is one component, often completed within one or two semesters.

This affects workload: research students manage their own timeline over many months, while coursework students balance project work alongside classes and exams. Our guide to masters by research vs coursework covers this in more detail.

Which one do you need?

Check these in order:

  • Your programme handbook or graduate school guidelines, which state the required output.
  • The course code and description for your final project.
  • Your supervisor or programme coordinator, if the documents are unclear.

Once you know the name and requirements, plan your chapter structure and timeline around them.

Frequently asked questions

Is a dissertation longer than a thesis?

Not necessarily. Length depends on the programme and university, not on the word. A PhD thesis is normally longer than a coursework dissertation, but a masters thesis and a masters dissertation can be similar in length. Check your programme handbook for the word limit.

Do Malaysian universities use thesis or dissertation?

Both words are used. Many use "thesis" for research masters and PhD, and "dissertation" or "project paper" for coursework programmes, but this is not universal. Follow the term used in your own programme documents.

Can I use the same structure for both?

Often yes. Both usually include an introduction, literature review, methodology, findings and conclusion. The difference is mainly in depth, originality and length. Confirm the required format with your supervisor or graduate school.
